以往這條交通要道會因冬季來臨而暫時封閉，不過今年則因恩佐伯隧道(Anzob tunnel)通車而未關閉。新建成的恩佐伯隧道，一共花了三千一百萬美元打造，而且正好經過這次發生雪崩意外的地點。

STORY: An avalanche killed at least 16 people in the mountains of Tajikistan on Saturday (December 22) while more people remained trapped under snow, an Interior Ministry official said. 

The avalanche, 70 km (45 miles) north of the Central Asian state's capital, Dushanbe, occurred after several days of heavy snowfall and hit a road that connects Dushanbe with another city, Khudjand. 

Mountains occupy 93 percent of Tajikistan's territory. Colonel Khaidar Makhmadiyev from the Interior Ministry said that a report from the site said 16 bodies had been dug out. 

But the Emergency Ministry said three people were killed and many more were still trapped under snow. Emergency Ministry official Makhmadullo  Khalimov said there were still people under the snow, but could not say how many. He said the rescue operation was continuing.  Makhmadiyev said all victims were either drivers or passengers of cars.

The vital link used to close for winter, but this year it stayed open thanks to the newly built 31 million dollar Anzob tunnel that goes under a snow-covered pass.
