INTRO:  Bachchan and Li win WEF cultural awards.  Actors Amitabh Bachchan and Jet Li receive Crystal Awards at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

STORY: Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan and martial arts actor Jet Li received Crystal Awards from the World Economic Forum on Saturday (January 31).

The annual awards recognise artists who have used their art to improve the world. Kuchipudi and Bharatnatyam dancer Mallika Sarabhai, and Venezuelan pianist Jose Abreu also took home Crystals.

The stars travelled to the exclusive Swiss ski resort of Davos where the world's financial and economic elite meet annually to discuss the world's pressing issues.

Bachchan was honoured in a glittering awards ceremony, for outstanding excellence in the field of culture. Chinese martial arts actor Jet Li was awarded for his philanthropic work, after creating the One foundation which, among other things, provides disaster relief to earthquake victims.

"It's not a normal crystal. Here have meaning, message I know it, from your heart. Keep gift. I promise you, everybody here, I will give my knowledge, my heart, my love, everything I can, give to the family, to the global family, give to the world. Because I am the citizen of the world, because I am made in China," Li said after receiving the award.

At a cultural dinner on Friday (January 30) Bollywood idol Bachchan took the chance to set the record straight on a recent row over British filmmaker Danny Boyle's "Slumdog Millionaire".

"Slumdog Millionaire", the rags-to-riches story of a boy from a Mumbai slum who competes on a television gameshow, swept the Golden Globe awards last week, landing four honours including Best drama. It has also earned 11 BAFTA and 10 Oscar nominations.

Bachchan, arguably India's biggest superstar, wrote on his blog (http://bigb.bigadda.com) that the critically acclaimed film might not have been such a success if an Indian had directed it.

But Bachchan said his comments had been misrepresented in the resulting media storm.  "I spoke to Mr Danny Boyle and other artists concerned and I told them there was this complete misreading about what I had said, I have never commented on the film or the subject or any of the artists, I've always welcomed the freedom of expression and this is the freedom of expression on the part of the maker and it's a very well-crafted film. I have seen it, I saw it when I was in Paris for the Salon de Cinema when they were doing a retrospective of my films, and it was very enjoyable. Everyone has the freedom to express himself, Mr Boyle has this impression, it was written by... the film was from a book really, so this is his interpretation of how the film should be and welcome that," he said.

Former Crystal Award winners include actress Emma Thompson and cellist Yo Yo Ma, who won in 2008.
